AccessHealth Lowcountry opened in Beaufort, SC in April 2013.  It is one of 10 programs state-wide that are modeled after Project Access in Ashville, NC.  Project Access was the vision and passion of Dr. Suzanne Landis, a well-respected internist in Ashville, NC.  Known as the Buncombe County Medical Society Project Access, Dr. Landis, in 1994 established a partnership between the medical society, the county government, physicians, service organizations and residents to provide all residents with proper medical care.

Nearly 500 physicians volunteer to see Project Access patients for free either upon referral to their private practice or through a community clinic, such as the Good Neighbor Free Medical Clinic we have here in Beaufort.  Of the 15,000 uninsured low-income residents of Buncombe County, nearly 13,000 have accessed primary care.  Each and every patient who has sought primary or specialty care has received it.  This is what we are hoping to accomplish right here in Beaufort.

Many hands make light work.

In terms of health care, if each practitioner were to participate in AccessHealth Lowcountry, many of the 22,000 low income, uninsured residents of Beaufort and Jasper County could be one step closer to being healthier and having an improved quality of life. Those 500 physicians in Buncombe County equal 85% of the practicing physicians.

In Beaufort, 85% of our physicians would be a much smaller number.  It is even smaller without your participation. AccessHealth Lowcountry is committed to providing your practice some “value added” benefits for not just those placed with you for free care but for all your self-pay patients, as well.

These benefits include:

• Appointment reminders and follow-up phone calls;

• Prescription assistance;

• Transportation assistance;

• Health education and coaching for patients with chronic conditions;

• Social work assessment and linkages to other human service organizations.

We are the “someone” you can call when your patient needs assistance with other areas of their life.

Please contact us at 843-522-5737 for more information or to sign up as a participating provider.  We would be happy to visit your office to speak with you and your office staff.

Recent quote from a local Physician: “I have been so pleased with the results I’ve seen with the diabetic patient I referred to you.  Through your help in getting her free monitoring supplies and the self-education you provided, I am seeing much greater compliance with her treatment regimen.”
